PETA Protests 14-year-old’s Cow Raffle

The parents of a 14-year-old boy are furious after PETA launched a protest against their son’s cow raffle – and then sent the child a link to a website filled with former Playboy models wearing “lettuce” bikinis.
“My wife and I were incensed,” said Scott Ward, of Slidell, La. “It was definitely not appropriate for a 14-year-old boy.”
Ward’s son, Logan, is raffling the cow to pay for a summer trip to Europe. He was recently selected as an student ambassador for People-to-People and has to raise $8,000 for the 19-day journey.

The Chicks-on-the-Right website first reported the story of the Ward Family.
“We’ve baked pies and washed cars – but the big one is the cow raffle,” he said. “We have a friend who is a farmer and he donated the cow. We decided to raffle it off.”
The winner of the raffle can either take possession of a living cow – or hundreds of pounds of ground beef, rib-eye steaks and brisket.
The family thought it was a unique and creative way to generate funds for the trip. But People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals thought it was grossly offensive.
Whitney Calk, a PETA street team coordinator, fired off a lengthy email to the eighth grade boy.
“It just seems a little strange to me that you feel that someone needs to die for you to go on a school trip,” she wrote the 14-year-old. “I feel like we can both surely agree that there are several other humane ways to fund raise these days that don’t involve a dead, chopped up corpse.”
Neither Calk nor PETA returned calls or emails seeking comment.
Calk suggested Logan host a veggie dog sale hosted by PETA’s bikini-clad Lettuce Ladies. She provided a link to their website – filled with photos of scantily-clad women wrestling in tofu, kissing each other, and doing rather inappropriate things with veggie dogs.
The Ward family was not amused.
“Some of those are former Playboy Playmates who wear lettuce bikinis,” Ward said. “That was the suggestion as an alternative fundraiser for our 14-year-old son.”
The boy has also been subjected to a barrage of hate mail from vegetarians.
“You’re disgusting and heartless,” one reader wrote. “Here’s reflecting all your vileness back to you. Hope whoever wins that poor animal’s flesh chokes on it.”
Ward called the attacks on his family and his son “very sad.”
“I find it somewhat ironic that these liberal types want to suggest that we as the conservatives are the purveyors of hate and vitriol – when that’s all I’ve seen directed at myself and my 14 year old son,” he said.
Miriam Weaver, a co-founder of the Chicks-on-the-Right website, told Fox News she was shocked by the PETA email.
“For crying out loud, how in the world did they find it the least bit appropriate to recommend that a 14-year-old boy fundraise with the freaking Lettuce Ladies,” Weaver wondered.
She said she opposes animal cruelty – but is a huge proponent of animal farmers and animal researchers.
“And here’s the thing,” Weaver added, “Cows are delicious.”
Ward was also attacked for making his son earn money for the summer trip.
“Some of them said I needed to do the honorable thing and pay for the trip,” he said. “So what I want to teach him – according to them – is that things are just given to you? That you don’t need to work for it? That you need to look for someone else to provide it for you?”
Ward said that’s not how they are raising their children. He said Logan is a straight-A student, a Boy Scout working toward his Eagle badge, a head drummer in the band, editor of the school yearbook, plays soccer and is active in his church.
“The young man knows how to work for what he wants,” Ward said. “We are proud parents of all our kids.”
As for the cow – Ward said they’ve sold 300 of the 1,000 tickets. Folks interested in getting a ticket should email: with their name, phone number, address, and number of tickets. You can also check out The Cow Raffle Facebook page.
